Many people seek fame and fortune. They are thrilled when they see their names in lights. Think some “Jumbotron” video screen in Times Square, New York, flashing your image; you are starring in a blockbuster movie with a mega media star. For most folks, that’s never going to happen, but it’s fun to dream about…especially if you aspire to stardom.
In the Lowcountry, we set our sights on more practical things, a bit more down-to-earth, so to speak. Thus, you can imagine how happy I was when I first saw my name prominently displayed on the back of a truck crossing the McTeer Bridge from Port Royal to Lady’s Island.
This is not intended to disparage Landon’s Septic Tank Service’s excellent performance. I have become an avid fan and a loyal customer. They have proven to be reliable and competent. I remember a few years ago we had a septic tank meltdown two days before some very fancy Europeans were about to visit us at Brays Island. The grinder pump for our guest house stopped functioning, which resulted in a rasping alert siren that woke the dead and sent every critter within a half mile scurrying for the deep forest. Landon’s Septic Tank Service to the rescue, and within a few hours, all problems were promptly resolved.
And, speaking of the publicity benefits, some of my friends who have seen the Landon’s Septic Tank Service truck actually wondered if I had, in fact, gone into the septic business. When asked about it, I smile cryptically and reply obliquely. Secretly, I may have missed my calling, and my aspiration to be in the septic business has so far gone unfulfilled. Ahh, the power of one’s name in lights…even if it is between the turn signal blinkers on a hard-working truck. In the Lowcountry, that may just have to do, and, as the old saying goes, “Any PR, even if it’s negative, is good PR, so long as they spell your name right.”
